Coronavirus Live Updates: Death Toll Reaches 56 as U.S. Finds Third Case

Published

Public health officials in Toronto announced on Saturday night that test results showed that Canada has its first “presumptive” case of coronavirus.

Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health, said the patient is a man in his 50s who returned to Toronto on Jan. 22 after visiting Wuhan, China. The following day he was admitted to a major Toronto hospital with a respiratory infection. He is now in stable condition.

Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, said that while they “are convinced” they have a positive case, a government laboratory in Winnipeg, Manitoba, will run additional tests for confirmation, which is why health officials are still calling it presumptive.

On Saturday, Portugal’s health ministry said in a statement that doctors were monitoring and treating a patient in the Curry Cabral hospital in Lisbon, who is believed to have contracted the virus during a recent stay in Wuhan. The patient, whose identity was not disclosed, was described as being in a stable condition. The Portuguese ministry is awaiting the results of hospital tests to confirm the virus.

In a sign of the growing global dread about the disease, Taiwan said on Sunday that it would bar all visitors from China’s Hubei Province to the self-governing island, where a handful of cases have been confirmed. Taiwan’s government also said it would suspend applications from Chinese citizens for travel permits except in special cases, such as disease control or humanitarian medical assistance.

In a sign that the central government was ramping up its response to contain the outbreak, China’s National Health Commission said it would send 1,230 medical experts to Wuhan to assist in treatment.

The army has sent another 450 people, from three military medical universities, to Wuhan, according to a state media article that the health commission shared on its website. And the air force sent military transport aircraft to the cities of Shanghai, Xi’an and Chongqing to pick up emergency airlifts of medical team members and medical supplies for Wuhan.

Migrants stranded in Mexico cling on to hopes of reaching U.S. border

Published

TAPACHULA, Mexico (Reuters) – Guatemalan migrant Wilfredo Gomez said on Saturday he had been asking God to make him “invisible” as Mexican security forces started rounding up and detaining other U.S.-bound Central Americans who had illegally crossed into the country.

Mexican security forces started taking a much tougher approach to Central American migrants earlier this week after hundreds entered the country illegally from Guatemala in an attempt to reach the U.S.-Mexican border.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is under intense pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to stop the number of migrants but his handling of the situation near the southern border has draw criticism.

Critics accused Lopez Obrador of doing Trump’s bidding after essentially erecting a “wall” of security forces that resulted in chaos. Gomez was one of the many Central American migrants who got caught up in the scramble earlier this week.

When Mexican authorities started rounding up and detaining others, Gomez said he prayed and threw away his backpack in an attempt to pass as Mexican. “I even told them good afternoon,” Gomez said. “God covered me, he made me invisible to them.”

Reuters was unable to determine how many of the migrants who had crossed into Mexico were still in the area. Even as chances of succeeding looked increasingly slim, many were clinging to hopes they would eventually reach the United States.

Gomez said he had been in Tapachula for two days, roaming the streets for food, sleeping alternately in the park, at the market or on the street. Mostly, he said, he had been contemplating how to reach the United States or Canada.

Though for now, with no money left, Gomez is staying put at the local migrant shelter. “I can’t stand the cold, the hunger and all that,” the 42-year-old said. “Here, at least I’ve got a place to sleep.”

Redditors create ‘Earth sandwich’ by placing bread on opposite sides of the globe, just because

These two guys just created the largest “sandwich” on the face of God’s green sandwich!

A few months back, Etienne Naude, a 19-year-old college student in New Zealand, reached out to the Reddit community for help making something he called an “Earth sandwich,” which, as he explained, is only achieved when “two people at opposite parts of the world place a piece of bread at the exact… opposite ends of the globe.”

Naude also explained that, due to his location in New Zealand, he’d need a little help from a sandwich artist living in Spain.

“Hi, I live in Auckland New Zealand, I am wanting to make a thing called an earth sandwich,” Naude wrote a post shared to the r/Spain subreddit. “I was wondering if there was anyone who lived around Olvera, Villamartin or Sevilla who wanted to be part of this and make the other half of the sandwich?”

Judging by the comments, Naude was flooded with folks willing to give it a go.

“From there I narrowed down who was in the region,” he told Mashable.

After coordinating over the Internet, Naude and his new pal in Spain eventually achieved his dream, documenting the resulting “sandwich” on Reddit.

“We made an earth sandwich!” he proudly declared in the follow-up post, which also contained a photo of himself and his Spanish counterpart posing with the “top” and “bottom” slices of bread.

Oh, and in case anyone was concerned, Naude noted that he and his friend in Spain used the same type of bread, lest anyone question the legitimacy of the snack.
