Natura urges Brazil to protect Amazon after fires hit suppliers

Brazilian cosmetics maker Natura & Co is pressing government officials, the private sector and local communities to bolster environmental protections in the Amazon after fires this year disrupted its supply chain, its chief executive told Reuters.

Natura, which makes many cosmetics using natural additives from the Amazon, convened meetings to facilitate dialogue as deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon region hit an 11-year high this year – Reuters

Soon to become the world’s fourth-largest beauty group after acquiring rival Avon Products Inc, Natura is advocating sustainable development of the Amazon without antagonizing right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro, who has called for greater economic exploitation of the vast region.

“It seems to me the new government is critical of existing control mechanisms but has not yet set in motion alternatives,” Natura CEO João Paulo Ferreira said in an interview late on Friday.

Under Bolsonaro, who took office at the start of this year, forest fires surged in August, the most for the month since 2010.

That backslide triggered global outcry about his government’s policies toward the world’s largest tropical rainforest, considered key to the fight against climate change because of the amounts of carbon dioxide it absorbs.

Reuters reported in August that Bolsonaro’s government had systematically weakened Brazil’s environmental agency, grounding an elite enforcement team and forbidding agents from destroying machinery used in illegal deforestation.

Natura, which makes many cosmetics using natural additives from the Amazon, convened meetings to improve dialogue between government officials, NGOs and local communities as deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon region hit an 11-year high this year.

“The Amazon rainforest is too big for an individual actor alone to have the capacity for change,” Ferreira said.

Last week, Natura publicly backed the Health and Happiness Project, expressing concern about a state police raid against the NGO amid a probe of a recent rash of forest fires.

Natura is also faced with operational challenges as some of its suppliers in the Amazon, mostly nut producers, were affected by the fires, according to Ferreira.

“Luckily, we were able to compensate for shortages by using our extensive network of 4,500 families in the Amazon region,” he said.

Natura’s ties with the Amazon can be traced to 1999, when it started working with local families to explore Brazil’s biodiversity in a sustainable way. The company partners with 37 communities supplying dozens of ingredients.

“We’ve been partners for almost 20 years now and Natura helps us strengthen our cooperative and improve management,” said Alexandro Queiroz dos Santos, who coordinates a project called RECA that supplies mostly vegetable oils and butter to Natura from 260 small agro-forestry producers.

Two of its producers lost plantations to flames a few months ago, and it also faces pressure from logging companies and cattle ranchers, Santos said.

Since 2011, Natura has invested around 1.5 billion reais (£278.25 million) in multiple activities in the Amazon, contributing to preserve 1.8 million hectares of rainforest.

Ferreira sees the company boosting Amazon investments as it expands the Natura brand following the acquisition of Britain’s The Body Shop in 2017 and Avon Products Inc this year.

He reiterated that the group is on track to conclude the Avon transaction by the end of the first quarter, after it was approved by Brazil’s antitrust body on Nov. 6 and by shareholders of both companies on Nov. 13.

Ashley Graham Poses Half Naked, Talks Pregnant Sex Positions

Well, there’s one thing you can say for sure about Ashley Graham — she ain’t shy!

The supermodel is one of this month’s Vogue cover girls, and in her profile for the glamor mag, she bares more than skin!

During the September interview she opens up all about the gender and due date for her first pregnancy, the advice she’s gotten from her new A-list momma friends, and yes — the perils of having sex while pregnant.

Ch-ch-check out her divine Annie Liebovitz-shot cover and highlights from the candid convo (below)!

Being honest and forthright is a point of pride with Ashley, and she proves it when it comes to talk of sex.

She begins by discussing her latest Pretty Big Deal podcast episode in which she interviewed Cindy Eckert, the developer of a new drug called Addyi, aka the female Viagra, which she excitedly says “turns on sexual fantasy.” She explains:

“For women it’s all like, we have a checklist: taking care of kids, worried about our husband, worried about our body. But the drug flips that and makes you want to have sex.”

Sounds pretty great! That leads to her latest sex life issues.

Obviously she and hubby Justin Ervin don’t have any problems in that department normally — after all, prayer is free! However, pregnancy has posed particular problems for the couple. She says:

“I feel like every relationship goes in waves of sex. You’re like, Hey, do we need to plan this? And now, with pregnancy, things have been real-ly diff-er-ent.”

How so?

“Because there’s this huge bulge that can be sensitive if you lay on it or go into a new position. I’ve been literally asking every single one of my friends who have had babies or who’re pregnant, like, ‘What positions do you guys do?’ This has to be a normal conversation among mothers.”

Luckily, she isn’t alone there…

Ashley explains how she made so many celeb friends through her pregnancy, saying there is just a “camaraderie” between women who have been through it:

“It’s a secret society that I didn’t know about.”

She explained:

“I was hiding my pregnancy for the first four months. I’ve always had control over my body — when everyone else wanted to dictate what it should be, I took full control over it — but I had this life inside of me saying, It’s not yours anymore, it’s mine. And you have to just succumb. And I felt like I didn’t have anyone to talk to. I was gaining weight rapidly. And I felt alone. And the one piece of advice that my stylist, Jordan Foster, gave me was, Make pregnant friends. None of my friends were in relationships, let alone pregnant. And now I have nine pregnant friends.”

One person who gave her advice? Kim Kardashian West, who went through two pregnancies before switching to surrogates. Ashley recalls:

“Kim immediately started telling me, ‘Ashley, the pregnancy may be the hardest part, but the birth is the easiest.’ I’m just taking in advice from everyone and not putting too much pressure on myself.”

She also became friends with Serena Williams, who told Vogue about her new pal Ashley:

“I text her anything that rolls off my mind. I was one of those people who wanted to know every ugly detail of what happens… down there… what happens everywhere. Like, why are my nipples so big a week into being pregnant? This makes no sense; the baby doesn’t need to eat yet. I wanted to know every single thing, and I still love talking about it. Because I feel like it’s important to kind of change the narrative and be like, it’s normal to feel scared, and not be one of those women who are like, ‘Oh, it’s so great!’ Just be scared out of your mind. That’s normal.”

Recently Ashley also met new mom Amy Schumer, who took her in right away! The comedian spilled to the mag:

“I was like, ‘Come over and I’ll just tell you what I have learned and what I wish I knew.’ And then I was like, ‘And the nicest thing I can do for you is tell you that you won’t hear from me again, but you can call me anytime.’ ’Cause it’s a lot. People are so in your face when you’re pregnant because they’re so f**king excited for you. And you don’t get it. You can’t possibly get it. And then after you’ve had a baby you’re like, ‘Oh, I get it!’”

Ashley is going to get it soon.

Her baby boy is due on January 11! As she tells the mag:

“He’ll be a Capricorn — just like his dad.”

Hopefully he’ll also be an open book like his mom!

Luckily, astrology is here and it can totally predict the gifts your best friend, your mom, your dad, and even your sister want, because—spoiler alert—it knows the future, oh, and all the ins and outs of your acquaintances’ personalities.

OK, so now to the fun part: Click the Sun sign of the person you wanna impress with the best gift ever and be inundated with wonderful ideas tailored to them, based on their horoscopes! Then, get ready for the profuse, profuse thank-yous you’re about to get. You really are so thoughtful, aren’t you?

FYI, we do this zodiac-themed gift guide every year—with help from Jake Register of Jake’s Astrology and the Cosmo’s Council—because it is scary accurate and it really, really works. Enjoy!

The ~stars~ are making Aries hyperfocused on career and self-image right now (get yours, girl), so practical gifts—like a new coffee machine that will jolt them awake during the weekdays or some profesh-looking red booties—will get the biggest (and most sincere) thank-yous.

Our Taurean friends are ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty. So it’s in everyone’s best interest to give them pretty things, including, but not limited to, chic bags, delish-smelling spritzes, and silk pillowcases that’ll keep their hair and skin on point.

Y’all know our sweet Gems, with all their diverse interests, are not the easiest to shop for—but they do love learning, and ATM, they’re particularly excited about spirituality and the occult. So…give ’em books! Especially ones about ~mysterious~ potions. Also: tarot cards.

Shouting for the people in the back: A generic gift won’t cut it for Cancers. But if you just can’t think of a cute inside-joke prezzie, go for home decor. Nothing’s more important to a crab than feeling nice ‘n’ nested.

In December, lion bbs are thinking about their daily routines and work obligations (womp). Anything fitness-y (hey, cute sneakers!) or helpful for keeping a schedule is gonna be a ht. When all else fails, makeup and clothes will do the trick. Leos will be Leos!

Honestly, just knowing that you thought of them is gift enough for Virgos. But with Jupiter sitting in their 5th house (making them fixated on fun, sex, and self-expression), they’ll love you forever if you spring for lingerie, surprise concert tix, or an op-point hatband.

Happy homes and fams are what Libras are currently all about, so get your fave one some fresh furnishings. Not to peer-pressure you, but this wine rack would look top-notch in their living room. Right?

Communication is big for Scorps so tech accessories will def make them smile. Otherwise, it’s all about listening to the hints they drop…like a new pair of sunnies that they mentioned (twice) they need or that red lipstick of yours they love.

You adventurous friend called: They want all this fun outdoorsy winter stuff this year, and yeah, they’re taking up skiing, so those goggles are absolutely necessary.

Jupiter—the planet of good luck—is currently camping out in Capricorn, which means This. Is. Their. Time! Feel free to go a bit more frivolous and fun than usual for this normally practical sign with designer bags, baubles, and allllllll the beauty stuff.

Not gonna lie, Aquarius is in a weird mood rn, with a lot of focus on their 12th house of isolation. It’s a great time to gift something that helps with their self-care, like a good read, a pretty candle, or a zen yoga mat.

Our fave fishies will be swimming in friendship vibes this winter, so you should probably consider giving a cute pair of pj’s for that girls’ weekend or cool accent pieces that’ll make them excited to host people for drinks at home.
